James Richards
Health Writer & Retired Family Physician
Dr. James Richards brings four decades of family medicine experience to his health and wellness writing, combining his medical expertise with the perspective of someone now navigating Medicare and senior health challenges himself. While still at his family practice, Dr. Richards discovered that many of his former patients were struggling not with complex medical conditions, but with understanding how to access and afford the care they needed.
James transitioned to writing when he started volunteering at free health clinics and realized that much of his time was spent helping people navigate insurance benefits, find prescription assistance programs, and understand which screenings they should prioritize. His medical training allows him to explain health topics while his recent experience as a new Medicare beneficiary gives him firsthand insight into the challenges facing seniors in the healthcare system.
His writing style reflects his bedside manner: thorough, patient, and focused on empowering people to advocate for their own health. James specializes in translating medical jargon into practical guidance and helping readers understand not just what they should do for their health, but how to actually make it happen within their budget and insurance constraints.
Currently, James splits his time between writing and volunteering with senior health education programs. He regularly speaks at community centers about medication management, preventive care, and mental health resources for older adults.
When he’s not writing, James enjoys thrifting and bird-watching.
